ETHIOPIA 2013 HUMAN RIGHTS Full Report

Ethiopia is a federal republic. The ruling Ethiopian Peoples’ Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), a coalition of four ethnically based parties, controls the government. In September 2012, following the death of former Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, parliament elected Hailemariam Desalegn as prime minister. In national parliamentary elections in 2010, the EPRDF and affiliated parties won 545 of 547 seats to remain in power for a fourth consecutive five-year term. Although the relatively few international officials allowed to observe the elections concluded that technical aspects of the vote were handled competently, some also noted that an environment conducive to free and fair elections was not in place prior to the election. Authorities generally maintained control over the security forces, although Somali Region Special Police and local militias sometimes acted independently. Security forces committed human rights abuses.

The most significant human rights problems included: restrictions on freedom of expression and association, including through arrests; detention; politically motivated trials; harassment; and intimidation of opposition members and journalists, as well as continued restrictions on print media. On August 8, during Eid al-Fitr celebrations, security forces temporarily detained more than one thousand persons in Addis Ababa. The government continued restrictions on activities of civil society and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) imposed by the Charities and Societies Procla
mation (the CSO law).

Nine Ethiopian migrants die at sea, eight others missing

Djibouti - At least nine Ethiopian migrants drowned after a boat ferrying them capsized in the Gulf of Aden, north of Obock City in Djibouti, the night of 26th February.

It is believed that 17 people were in the boat when the tragedy occurred. Preliminary investigations have shown that eight other passengers are missing. Rescue efforts have been launched to retrieve their bodies.

The boat capsized as a result of strong winds, when the engine stalled at sea between the islands called ‘‘Seven Brothers’’ and the locality of Guen. They were en route to Yemen.

Seven people, including three minors, who were travelling in a second boat, were found at the shore at Kor-angar, 45 kilometres from the Port of Obock. They were exhausted and traumatized. Eleven other migrants, who had been travelling with them, had left the site and have not been traced.

Confronting the Renaissance Dam problem

While options for international action exist on Ethiopia’s proposed Renaissance Dam, Egypt must implement domestic conservation measures and spur other Upper Nile water providing projects, writes Maghawry Shehata
The Egyptian people are clamouring for tough measures against Ethiopia in response to its intransigence on the question of the Renaissance Dam that threatens the security of their most important resource, the Nile. Popular frustration mounted as Egyptian negotiators’ patience wore thin in defending Egypt’s water rights as confirmed and reconfirmed in every negotiating opportunity not only since 1981 but since the outset of the 20th century. In the rounds in 1902, 1906 and 1929 it was established that Egypt had a right to an annual quota of Nile waters of 48 billion cubic metres. This quota remained unchanged until 1959 when the Egyptian-Sudanese Nile Waters Agreement added the quantity of water stored as the result of the construction of the High Dam (a quantity that had previously gone to waste). Thus, the Egyptian quota was brought up by 7.5 billion cubic metres to 55.5 billion cubic metres a year. This quota was subsequently reconfirmed in an agreement signed in 1993 between former  president Hosni Mubarak and then Ethiopian prime minister Meles Zenawi who, additionally, reaffirmed his country’s commitment not to undertake any hydraulic works that might prevent Egypt from receiving its rightful share of Nile waters.

Ethiopia’s middle class rises, with western diseases in tow

Ten years ago, Tamrat Bekele would have been lucky to find 25 customers a day. Today, his medical laboratory in Addis Ababa tests 10 times as many.
The Ethiopian entrepreneur is surprised less by the swell in business than the rising popularity of tests more often associated with affluent, western lifestyles, especially cholesterol and hypertension.
“We used to be overwhelmed with infectious disease but as the middle class increases and lifestyle changes, all these non-communicable diseases are now rising very, very fast,” says Mr Bekele, who hopes International Clinical Laboratories, the most advanced testing facility in Ethiopia, can expand
to serve more of the country’s 90m people, as well as other countries in eastern Africa.
Although Ethiopia remains largely agrarian, poor and closed to foreign investors, it is also one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies and the last big market on the continent that investors want to crack.

Ishak Ayiris, the son of Ethiopian immigrants has won a place at ETON with £76,000 scholarship

  • Ishak Ayiris, 15, is the son of Ethiopian immigrants who rely on benefits
  • He has won a scholarship to do his A-levels at Eton starting in September
  • The teenager plans to enter politics to help residents of his home borough of Newham in east London

A schoolboy from one of the poorest areas in Britain is set to follow in the footsteps of David Cameron and Boris Johnson after winning a scholarship to Eton worth £76,000.
Ishak Ayiris, the son of Ethiopian immigrants who are dependent on benefits, will swap an East End council estate for the 15th-century school which has produced 19 Prime Ministers.
The 15-year-old is set to arrive at Eton in September, entering in the sixth form to study A-levels in politics, philosophy and economics.
He is currently a pupil at Forest Gate Community School in Newham, east London, where he is supported by the 'pupil premium' payment which gives extra support to disadvantaged children.
When he starts at Eton, which is situated across the River Thames from Windsor in Berkshire, he will board in one of the school's 25 boarding houses.

Ethiopian natural resources at risk

Shiferraw has been ringing the alarm for months, calling for due attention to protect Ethiopia's unique flora and make good use of its genetic resources.
World Bulletin / News Desk
A long drawn out patent row between Ethiopia and the Netherlands concerning teff – a highly nutritious ancient grain variety – has made headlines in Ethiopia, but a local official is worried that not only teff is in danger of being "looted."
"A great many genetic resources of Ethiopia are in perpetual danger of being looted," Aweke Shiferraw, communication director at the Ethiopian Intellectual Property Office, told Anadolu Agency in an exclusive interview.
Shiferraw has been ringing the alarm for months, calling for due attention to protect Ethiopia's unique flora and make good use of its genetic resources.
Teff is indigenous to Ethiopia, where it accounts for one quarter of total cereal production. It is believed that teff originated in Ethiopia between 4000 BC and 1000 BC.
Eragrostis is the scientific name of one variety of teff, a staple food in Ethiopia that has been on Ethiopian tables for thousands of years. Eros is the Greek name for love, and Grostis is Greek for grass. It is therefore also known outside Ethiopia as "lovegrass."

Africa’s Next Oil Frontier – Ethiopia?

Sitting athwart the headwaters of the Blue Nile, Ethiopia has long seen its energy future in its hydropower potential, being able to export electricity to neighboring countries.

That picture may be about to be somewhat altered however. British oil firm New Age (African Global Energy) Ltd works a concession in Ethiopia’s southeastern Ogaden basin blocs 7-8 and its Adigala lease with its Canadian oil firm partner Africa Oil.
On 12 February New Age (African Global Energy) Ltd found an oil and gas flow at its Elkuran-3a appraisal well depth of 3,900 feet. The company began drilling the appraisal well in October 2013, with a targeted depth of 9,350 feet.

While New Age (African Global Energy) Ltd executives are doubtlessly excited, local petroleum specialists noted that the results are similar to those of American company Tenneco that drilled the first exploration well in the Elkuran locality in 1972. A petroleum expert told the Ethiopian media that the discovery does not necessarily mean that there is a commercial deposit, commenting, “Oil and gas flows are very common in that region, especially in the Elkuran and Hilala localities. More exploration work is needed.”

Ethiopia’s wealth of surprises

The East African country may not be on everyone’s must-visit travel list, but it has a lot to offer
The first time I learnt about Ethiopia was when I watched the video to We Are The World, as images of starving African children with distended bellies flashed across the television screen. And it seems that Ethiopia is still haunted by those powerful images of famine and poverty. The country isn’t exactly on everyone’s must-visit vacation list. To top it off, the costly cocktail of vaccinations I needed — it’s compulsory to be vaccinated against yellow fever, and my doctor advised me to get the meningococcal vaccine and malaria pills — didn’t help put my mind at ease. At first.

As I later found out, giving the country a miss would be a huge pity. Ethiopia is eager to exorcise the ghosts of its past. It wants to show off its beautiful scenery, otherworldly architecture and gracious people. All you need to do is be there.

 LIVING IT UP

After a 13-hour red-eye flight from Singapore to capital city Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Airlines, it took another two hours by car to get to resort town and popular day-trip destination Debre Zeit, but it was worth the squeeze through the morning traffic.

The man who quits engineering to start Ethiopia Flavors

For a long time the deep fried scents of quick and greasy fast food have wafted through local food courts.

But the hold of fast food chains on the humble food court continues to loosen as independent restaurant owners move in from the suburbs to attract the big shopping crowds.

The owner of Ethiopia Flavours in Westfield Woden believes his is the first Ethiopian food court outlet in Australia.

Despite the small Ethiopian population in Canberra, Jonita Hagos said the big Ethiopian food presence here was credit to the changing tastes of Canberrans.

"Once they try, they keep coming, specifically telling their friends," he said.

Mr Hagos also owns the restaurant Ethiopia Down Under in Pearce. He quit his job as an engineer in construction seven months ago to start Ethiopia Flavours.

"Only similar food is available in the different malls, like Subway, McDonald's or Ali Baba, but we offer something new."

Ethiopians sweep Sentara Colonial Half Marathon

Under beautiful but unseasonably warm weather, the 35th annual Sentara Colonial Half Marathon and 5K Run attracted over 1,000 pre-registrants and additional entries race day, with 702 official finishers in the half marathon and 252 official finishers in the 5K. There was also an untimed fun run around William and Mary Hall, with all events finishing inside Kaplan Arena.

With this unusually cold winter throughout the Middle Atlantic states, none of the runners were prepared for the 71-degree high for the day under sunny skies and little wind, and times for most were considerably slower than expected, but it was great for spectators, volunteers and runners to escape the winter woes, at least for one day, and run in shorts and singlets or T-shirts.

DIBABA AND AMAN CARRY ETHIOPIA’S HOPES IN SOPOT – IAAF WORLD INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

Ethiopia will send 11 athletes, including two reserves, to the IAAF World Indoor Championships next month in the Polish city of Sopot.

The outstanding gold medal favourite – not just for the Ethiopian team, but arguably of the whole championships – is Genzebe Dibaba.

The reigning world indoor 1500m champion has been in incredible form this year, setting world indoor records* in each of her three outings.

At the start of this month she smashed the world indoor 1500m record with 3:55.17 in Karlsruhe. Five days later, she took six seconds off the world indoor 3000m record with 8:16.60 in Stockholm. Little more than a week later, she set a world indoor best for two miles with a storming 9:00.48 run in Birmingham.

Ethiopia: Technology sees al-Shabaab emerge to become a regional threat

Security experts and government officials from more than a dozen Middle East and Horn of Africa countries are meeting in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, to find ways to counter violent extremist groups.
The meeting brings together security officials and experts working on how to counter extremist messages being disseminated in the Horn of Africa.
We have seen al-Shabaab emerge to become a regional threat
The meeting, themed "Countering Violent Extremist messaging in the Greater Horn of Africa", brings together the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency, the U.S. Department of State and the Near East and South Asia Center for Strategic Studies.
"Over the last couple of decades the numbers of available choices for terrorists have simultaneously increased alongside the advancement of digital technology", said Ambasador Taye Atske Selassie, an official from Ethiopia's Ministry of foreign affairs, at the opening ceremony.
"We are looking specifically in countering violent extremist massaging and efforts to respond to violent extremist communication and strategic communication approach," said Benjamin P. Nickels, an expert on transnational threats and counter-terrorism.

Ethiopian Minister Slams Uganda for Passing Anti-Gay Law

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia -- Zenebu Tadesse, Ethiopia's Minister of Women, Children and Youth Affairs has taken to twitter criticizing the passing of Uganda's anti-gay law, on Monday.

Tadesse tweeted: "There is no place for hate, discrimination in my beloved Africa. It's not Governments' business to make dress code or anti-gay laws #Uganda."

The tweet came shortly after Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni signed a harsh anti-gay law that punishes gay sex with up to life in prison.

Tadesse's African voice joins a worldwide condemnation of Uganda's new anti-gay law.

On Sunday, the former Archbishop of Cape Town, Nobel Peace Prize winning Desmond Tutu has compared Uganda's new anti-gay law to Nazi and Apartheid discrimination.

Reacting to the news, Ugandan LGBT rights advocate, Frank Mugisha, told me that he very much welcomed Tadesse's statement.

Ethiopian immigrants 'walked for nine months' to Zimbabwe

Twelve Ethiopian illegal immigrants walked for nine months to Zimbabwe to escape religious tensions in the Horn of Africa nation, a court was told on Monday.

They were arrested late last year in Bulawayo but the trial delayed because of lack of an Amharic interpreter.

On Friday, they were sentenced to three months in prison, which was wholly suspended for five years on condition they do not remain in Zimbabwe without proper documentation.

“I walked for nine months to Zimbabwe because of religious tensions in my country. I was hoping to get peace and job opportunities,” one of them said.

ADMISSION OF GUILT

The group had been arrested on December 4, 2013 while hiding at a house in Bulawayo.

“My parents were killed while I watched and they burnt our farm which was our only means of survival. We came here seeking asylum because life had become difficult in Ethiopia.

Ethiopian Physicians Around The Globe Are Merging Their Efforts To Establish A Center Of Excellence Hospital In Ethiopia

WASHINGTON, Feb. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Ethio-American Doctors Group, Inc. ("EADG") and Global Ethiopian Medical Enterprise, Inc. ("GEME") have agreed to merge their efforts to pursue their common goal to build and establish a center of excellence hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, under one entity: EADG. Collectively, both organizations have over 250 physicians members of Ethiopian origin and this exciting development will likely result in other members of the Ethiopian physician community to join, bringing the total number of physicians of the combined organization to reach and, perhaps, exceed 300 physicians.
By uniting their intellectual and membership resources, the identical mission of EADG and GEME to establish a center of excellence hospital will be strengthened and enhanced, which in turn will have a tremendous impact in the lives of the people of Ethiopia. To enable marshaling all resources, the Ethiopian government through its various Ministries and agencies (e.g., Health, Foreign Affairs, etc.), various US agencies who have been briefed about this project, and people and firms in the business community throughout the world have supported and encouraged both organizations to combine their efforts under one entity to establish a world class hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Trauma of Ethiopia's needless baby deaths

Lying in her hospital bed, Zewdit Mekonen looked up at me with a bereft, haunted expression that I will never forget.

I listened as she recounted how she had gone into labour at her home. But then, sensing something was going badly wrong, she had started on the three-hour walk to her nearest hospital.

She was expecting twins and as she walked the first twin began to emerge. Zewdit feared he was dead as he was so quiet. In agony and terrified that she had already lost one baby, she staggered on, desperate not to lose the second.

After her horrific ordeal I hoped that the doctors at the Dessie Hospital in Ethiopia had been able to save at least one of Zewdit’s babies.

But no, all that awaited her at the end of her journey was heartbreak.

Doctors told her the terrible news: both her twins had died.

Egypt seeks to halt Ethiopian dam

CAIRO — Cairo has begun a diplomatic campaign on two tracks, one explicit and one undeclared, with European countries and donor parties. This came after the Egyptian government escalated its campaign against the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam under its current specifications to protect Egypt’s historic interests in Nile water, following failed technical negotiations with Ethiopia.
“The campaign initiated by Egypt is on two tracks, one that is explicit and involves meetings by Egypt’s ministers of water and foreign relations with their counterparts in countries with influence in the Nile Basin, and one that is undeclared and involves meetings by Egypt’s ambassadors in these countries. The two tracks aim to persuade the international community to reject the dam’s construction because it may lead to further conflict and instability in the region of the Nile Basin,” a diplomatic source in contact with the Egyptian government told Al-Monitor.

Ethiopian army voiced their readiness to 'protect' the country's hydroelectric dam project.

A host of Ethiopian army commanders have voiced their readiness to protect the country's multibillion-dollar hydroelectric dam project, currently at the heart of a major row with Cairo due to Egyptian fears the dam could threaten its traditional share of Nile water.

State-run television reported that military commanders had visited the project site, during which they had voiced their readiness to "pay the price" to protect the dam, which they described as a "national project."

According to state television, the visit – the first by military commanders to the site – came as part of activities marking Ethiopia's Army Day.

Relations between Egypt and Ethiopia soured last year over a plan by the latter to build its Grand Renaissance Dam on the upper reaches of the Nile River – which has historically represented Egypt's main source of water.

An Ethiopian Plane Hijacking Passenger Gives Us The Real Story In A Fantastic Reddit AMA

In the most terrifying possible scenario happening on a plane, an Ethiopian flight was hijacked on its way to Geneva. The media reported that the passengers really didn't know what was going on, but as with mainstream media, they didn't really know what they were reporting. A passenger that was on the flight took to Reddit to answer questions and give their tale of what happened on the flight. Via Reddit:

After entering the plane, I went to my seat: economy class, window-side and next to the right wing. As it was around midnight, I quickly fell asleep during take-off. I was waken up an hour later due to the sound of all the oxygen mask going down. I immediatly thought « what the… » I looked at my neighbor, she seemed as confused at me: the plane was not behaving oddly so I thought it was a simple technical glitch or somebody pressed the wrong button. Everybody looked at each other, thinking what’s going on. Suddenly, a deep and angry voice talked through the cabin radio: “SIT DOWN, PUT YOUR MASKS ON, I’M CUTTING THE OXYGEN”, three times. At this point, I realized that the situation is serious: someone is in the pilot cabin and has hijacked the plane. Within a few seconds, the oxygen went down in the cabin: I felt very lightheaded and quickly decided to put on the oxygen mask like the rest of the passengers.

That all sounds just terrible. What got me though is that the pilot could shut off the oxygen? That doesn’t sound realistic. Thankfully, a Redditor swooped in to explain.

Just so everybody knows, the pilot can’t just “turn the oxygen off to the cabin.” The cabin air isn’t anything more than outside air that has been filtered. It is pulled into the aircraft through a bleed system in the jet engines. There is no supplemental oxygen in the cabin air supply to turn off. It’s just plain air.

What the captain could do is depressurize the cabin, which would make breathing difficult or impossible, forcing people to use the supplemental oxygen masks. But that would be a dangerous move for other reasons.

Ethiopian Airlines hijacking: Why co-pilot might have taken extreme steps to leave

Repression, rigged elections and bans on leaving the country mean it's no surprise that a co-pilot wanted out, writes David Blair

Desperate migrants go to extreme lengths to leave their homelands, but only a select few resort to hijacking. The Ethiopian Airlines co-pilot who landed his plane in Geneva joins a club that previously consisted of nine Afghans who forced an airliner to fly to Stansted Airport in 2000.
In reality, the co-pilot's choice might not be as inexplicable as it sounds. At least 620,000 Ethiopians live abroad, including 10 per cent of all those with a university degree, according to the World Bank.
Ethiopians with marketable skills are highly likely to seek their fortunes abroad: the country's emigration rate is 30 per cent for doctors and 17 per cent for nurses. A qualified pilot would fall into the category of those most likely to leave.

Cities in motion: Addis Ababa already has a great network – minibus taxis

Ethiopian capital's 'blue donkeys' are cheap, quick and adaptable – so will a new light railway aid or hinder the city?
Monday 8am: it's peak hour as I approach the roadside. The new Chinese bitumen (asphalt) may have swallowed the potholes of Bole Road, but the traffic is as crazy as ever. Cars weave erratically across five lanes and jostle for space amid the clamour of police whistles, relentless honking, and noisy construction sites. Within a few moments, a minibus taxi swings into view, the conductor shouting "Bole, Bole" through the open window.

The ubiquitous blue and white Toyota HiAce or "blue donkey" is the main form of public transport in the Ethopian capital, Addis Ababa. I jump into the battered van and squeeze between some commuters on to a worn and dusty seat as the driver speeds off. I rummage through my pockets for the 1.5 birr (5p) fare as passengers clamber on and off at regular intervals before we reach the Bole bridge bus terminal.

Hailemedhin Abera Tegegn: Who Is The Ethiopian Airlines Hijacker, And Why Was He Desperate For Asylum?

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – Airline passengers en route to Italy were rerouted to Switzerland on Monday morning in a peaceful but puzzling hijacking episode, carried out by the plane's own co-pilot.

Ethiopian Airlines flight ET702 was headed from Ethiopia's capital city of Addis Ababa to Rome when the captain took a bathroom break. The first officer then locked himself inside the cockpit, reported the hijacking to airport transponders, and aimed his Boeing 767 toward Geneva. Reports indicate that the passengers were blissfully unaware of the situation until they touched down. They were heavily searched upon exiting the aircraft, after which the airline began efforts to get all 193 passengers – mostly Italian nationals – to their final destinations.

The unarmed hijacker's own fate is unclear. Hailemedhin Abera Tegegn, 31, is an Ethiopian national who has worked for Ethiopian Airlines for five years. After landing safely around 6 a.m. local time, he disembarked from the aircraft through the cockpit window and handed himself over to the Swiss police, in whose custody he remains. The hijacker could face a prison sentence of up to 20 years on charges of hostage-taking.

Ethiopian Airlines co-pilot would press charges that could carry a prison sentence of up to 20 years.

GENEVA (AP) — An Ethiopian Airlines co-pilot hijacked a plane bound for Rome on Monday and flew it to Geneva, where he wanted to seek asylum, officials said.
The Boeing 767-300 plane with 202 passengers and crew aboard had taken off from the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, and landed in the Swiss city at about 6 a.m. (0500 GMT). Officials said no one on the flight was injured.

Geneva airport chief executive Robert Deillon told reporters that the co-pilot, an Ethiopian man born in 1983, took control of the plane when the pilot ventured outside the cockpit.

"The pilot went to the toilet and he (the co-pilot) locked himself in the cockpit," Deillon said.

The man "wanted asylum in Switzerland," he said. "That's the motivation of the hijacking."

Ethiopian co-pilot hijacked jet after locking pilot out - police

(Reuters) - A hijacked Ethiopian plane that landed at Geneva airport early on Monday was diverted from Rome by the co-pilot, who sought asylum due to fear of persecution in Ethiopia, police spokesman Pierre Grangean told a news conference.
The unnamed co-pilot, an Ethiopian born in 1983, locked the cockpit door when the pilot went to the toilet. He then asked to refuel at Geneva, landed the plane, climbed down from the cockpit window on a rope, and gave himself up to police.
He was unarmed and there was no risk at any time to crew or passengers, Grangean said. The co-pilot is being questioned by police.

Crew member seeks asylum after taking control of flight ET702 from Addis Ababa to Rome and diverting course to Switzerland
Swiss police have detained the co-pilot of an Ethiopian Airlines flight that was forced to land at Geneva’s international airport early on Monday morning.

Police said the co-pilot, who has asked to be granted asylum, took control of the plane when the pilot went to the toilet, then landed and left through the window on a rope.

Authorities said the situation was under control and no passengers or crew had been injured.

Flight ET 702 had been diverted from its original destination of Rome. The airline earlier said the flight from the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa had been “forced to proceed” to Geneva.

Ethiopia's Rehima Kedir wins the Hong Kong Marathon

Marathon winner Rehima Kedir on the podium with second-placed Misiker Demissie and Gemechu Debellu (bronze).
Ethiopian overcomes hamstring problems to turn in one of the best runs of her career as she and her compatriots sweep the top places
Rehima Kedir was in two minds for a second or two as she motored towards the finish line in the women's marathon.

The 28-year-old Ethiopian was out in front but, like the crowd gathered inside Victoria Park, had been expecting a challenge to emerge from two-time winner Misiker Demissie down the stretch.

With victory in sight, Kedir quickly stole a half-glance over her shoulder and then took a longer, harder look just to make sure the marathon was hers for the taking.

A broad smile then broke out across her face as she crossed the line to win in 2:34:53 and Kedir celebrated by kneeling down and kissing the ground.

Jamaican Bobsleigh? No, Ethiopian ski team!

Ethiopian skier Robel Teklemariam poses during training on the street of the capital Addis Ababa February 3, 2010.
(Reuters) - There is no precise word for 'snow' in the Amharic language of Ethiopia, but that did not stop the Teklemariam brothers from establishing the country's first ski association and opening the doors to winter sports for young African athletes.

Drawing sporting inspiration from Ethiopia's world-beating long distance runners and hoping to represent Ethiopia for the first time in the Winter Olympics, Yoseph, Benyam, and Robel Teklemariam founded the Ethiopian Ski Association (ESA) in 2005.

Robel competed at the 2006 and 2010 Games in Turin and Vancouver and has raised awareness of winter sports to Ethiopians around the world.

"Most Ethiopians that we meet or have commented online think it's really cool and are often amazed that their country has a skier that represented them in the Winter Olympics," Yoseph said in a telephone interview.

Ethiopia's Genzebe Dibaba sets third record of the month

Ethiopia's Genzebe Dibaba set her third world best in 15 days by shattering the indoor two-mile record at the Birmingham Indoor Grand Prix.
The 23-year-old's time of nine minutes and 0.48 seconds eclipsed Meseret Defar's mark by almost six seconds.
Dibaba, sister of three-time Olympic champion Tirunesh, already owns the world 3,000m and 1500m  indoor records.
Elsewhere, British indoor champion James Dasaolu won the men's 60m despite suffering an injury during the race.
The 26-year-old Londoner posted the quickest time of the year in the heats, clocking 6.47 seconds, but his 6.50-second victory in the final was marred by an injury sustained in the final 10m.
Dasaolu, a medal hope for next month's World Indoor Championships, later said he suspected it was cramp after initially fearing a hamstring problem.
"My left leg felt tight at about 40-50m. I think it's cramp, but I'll go and see the doctors and see what they say," said Dasaolu, who was clutching his left leg while crossing the line.
British Athletics medical staff said the sprinter would be assessed further on Monday.
It was the final race of the day, however, which drew a standing ovation from a sell-out crowd who applauded Dibaba's incredible feat.

Hijacker arrested after Ethiopian Airlines flight forced to land in Geneva

Reports say flight ET702 from Addis Ababa to Rome was flying over Sudan when it signalled a hijacking
Swiss authorities have detained the hijacker of an Ethiopian Airlines flight that was forced to land at Geneva’s international airport early on Monday morning, airport police said, adding that passengers and crew were safe.

The situation was “under control”, police said after flight ET 702 had been diverted from its original destination of Rome. The airline earlier said the flight from the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa had been “forced to proceed” to Geneva.

An Ethiopian government spokesman, Redwan Hussein, told Reuters the flight had made a scheduled stop in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, where he said the hijacker or hijackers might have boarded the flight.

“We don’t know where they are from or how many they are but it looks like the hijacker or hijackers boarded the flight in Khartoum,” Redwan told Reuters shortly before police announced they had detained the assailant.

BREAKING: Ethiopian Airlines’ Flight 702 Hijacked. Lands in Geneva.

Photo of the Boeing 767 (reg ET-AMF) that could be possibly hi-jacked as flight ETH702
At 5:00pm Pacific Time, Ethiopian Flight 702, a Boeing 767-300 (registered ET-AMF) was flying over Sudan when it started squawking 7500. The transponder code, is supposed to indicate a “hijacking.”

Sometimes, pilots accidentally switch to this code or equipment malfunctions. This however, does not appear to be the case. The aircraft can be tracked live via Flightradar 24.

This was hopefully just an error, but this was certainly a deviation from normal flight.

We have reached out to a source who is an aircraft electrical expert and they confirmed that a “7500″ code can’t come from a glitch.

The flight, operating from Addis Abba to Rome has been confirmed by Rome Airport not to have arrived yet.  It is currently circling over Geneva Airport (GVA), with a military escort.  Emergency crews are standing by a GVA.
The aircraft landed in Geneva, safely, but with an extremely limited quantity of fuel remaining.

Ethiopia rose farms in export overdrive for Valentine’s Day

It is seven in the morning and 300 workers are arriving at the Gallica rose farm, a vast complex on the outskirts of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.

Each year, the farm’s eight hectares of greenhouses produce around five million roses to be exported around the world.

But the run up to St Valentine’s Day is a particularly busy time of the year. Today alone, more than 20,000 flowers will be harvested.

"Here the cycle is about 80 days,” explains farm manager Gizachew Wondemu. “If you plant the roses 80 days ago, you get them now. So we try to prepare some of the varieties to come, mainly the red ones. We're always producing less than the demand."

Ethiopia is mainly known for its coffee. But the country’s agricultural sector is growing and, over the last 12 years and boosted by investment from the Ethiopian government, the niche market of flower production has boomed in particular.

Egypt irrigation minister says 'all options open' in Ethiopia dam row

CAIRO - Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Mohamed Abdel-Muttalib on Thursday said that "all options are open" for Egypt regarding Ethiopia's multibillion-dollar hydroelectric dam project, which Egypt fears could threaten its traditional share of Nile water.
"Ethiopian decision-makers must bring a solution to the table that won't compromise Egypt's share of water," Abdel-Muttalib told Anadolu Agency.
Abdel-Muttalib stressed that Egypt wouldn't close the door to negotiations with Addis Ababa, but maintained that the "internationalization" of the crisis remained an option for the Egyptian government in the event of an impasse.
"All options and scenarios are open," Abdel-Muttalib asserted. "Each party has the right to defend its interests without compromising the other's rights."

Debebe retires from international football

Ethiopia's long serving captain Degu Debebe has called it quits from International football just days after the head coach Sewnet Bishaw was sacked.

The soft spoken St. George defender has alluded to the fact that he felt unappreciated as fans and media personalities directed abuses and jibes at him both personally and on social media after the poor performance in the just ended Chan tournament hosted by South Africa.

A blunder by Degu Debebe against Libya gifted them a goal and he was then benched for the rest of the tourney by coach Bishaw.

" I have announced by International retirement after what I experienced after Chan in South Africa. I gave solid years of my career to Walia but one mistake against Libya led to so many abuses being directed to me personally and even on social media issues that also affected my family."

Egypt minister slams Turkey for role in Ethiopia dam

Egyptian Irrigation Minister Mohamed Abdel-Muttalib accused Turkey of offering expertise to Ethiopia over the proposed Nile dam project that will threaten Egypt's water supply.
World Bulletin / News Desk
Egyptian Irrigation Minister Mohamed Abdel-Muttalib said Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu had visited Addis Ababa and offered Turkish expertise on Ethiopia's controversial multi-billion dollar hydroelectric dam project.
"Any side that doesn't like Egypt could be in the scene," Abdel-Muttalib said in televised statements late Tuesday.
"The Turkish foreign minister visited Addis Ababa and offered them [Ethiopian officials] Turkish expertise," he added.
"What I want to say is that when Turkey built the Ataturk Dam, it made the Syrians and the Iraqis thirsty and ignored international agreements," Abdel-Muttalib claimed.

Ethiopian immigrant Patient shoots dentist dead, then himself

A 56-year-old dentist was shot and killed Thursday on the sidewalk near his San Francisco office by one of his patients, who said only, "You remember me?" before opening fire, police and witnesses said.

The gunman then crossed the street, got into his car, and shot and killed himself.

Police investigators, relatives and co-workers of the dentist, David Gong of San Francisco, were at a loss to understand why the 44-year-old patient killed him. They said the gunman, identified as Hailu Abje of San Francisco, had gum problems and had gone to Gong for treatment, but no one knew of any trouble between the two men.

Abje, an Ethiopian immigrant who was also known as Hailu Sudike, had no criminal record. Police said the only explanation they could come up with for why he opened fire at Jackson and Polk streets shortly before 8 a.m. was that he held Gong responsible for his dental problems.
"This guy's got really bad teeth and really bad gums," said Inspector Karen Lynch of the homicide detail. "I think he decided (Gong) was the source of the problem."

Manufacturing in Africa-An awakening giant

If Africa’s economies are to take off, Africans will have to start making a lot more things. They may well do so
LESS than an hour’s drive outside Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, a farmer walks along a narrow path on a green valley floor after milking his cows. Muhammad Gettu is carrying two ten-litre cans to a local market, where he will sell them for less than half of what they would fetch at a dairy in the city. Sadly, he has no transport. A bicycle sturdy enough to survive unpaved tracks would be enough to double his revenues. At the moment none is easily available. But that may be about to change.

An affiliate of SRAM, the world’s second-largest cycle-components maker, based in Chicago, is aiming to invest in Ethiopia. Its Buffalo Bicycles look ungainly but have puncture-resistant tires, a heavy frame and a rear rack that can hold 100kg. They are designed and assembled in Africa, and a growing number of components are made there from scratch, creating more than 100 manufacturing jobs. About 150,000 Buffalo bikes are circulating on the continent, fighting puncture-prone competition from Asia.
F.K. Day, a SRAM founder, says he set up his first African workshop in South Africa and is looking at Addis Ababa and Mombasa in Kenya as possible next sites. Landlocked Ethiopia has only partially shed its Marxist heritage yet is attracting industrial companies. Huajian, a Chinese shoemaker (pictured above), has built an export factory not far from Mr Gettu’s farm.

Yared Tekabe’s Research Show Promising Results in Treatment of Diabetes

New York (TADIAS) — Dr. Yared Tekabe, a research scientist at Columbia University, has been working on groundbreaking non-invasive detection of heart diseases such as atherosclerosis — the building up of plaque in your arteries — which can lead to heart attack or stroke. After developing a tracer that could show the presence of a receptor called RAGE in areas where tissues were inflamed, Tekabe and his colleagues have now moved from detection and diagnostics to applying anti-RAGE antibodies for therapeutic purposes.
“Until now we were focusing on early diagnosis of heart diseases using our anti-RAGE antibody to diagnose diseases such as atherosclerosis and cardiomyopathy — a condition where muscle tissue of the heart becomes enlarged or rigid leading to irregular heartbeat or heart failure,” says Tekabe in a recent interview with Tadias. “At the time we didn’t realize the therapeutic potential for the antibody.”

US fund health programme to reach 1.6 million Ethiopians

More than 1.6 million households in 49 Ethiopian cities are set to receive high-quality health services through a US government supported programme.

In a bid to promote greater health access and improved health status of city dwellers, the US Agency for International Development (USAID), in collaboration with Ethiopia's Ministry of Health has launched a programme called "Strengthening Ethiopia's Urban Health Programme".
one of our priorities in the primary healthcare system is to focus on innovative community-based approaches
The health programme is expected to target key areas such as HIV, tuberculosis and maternal and child health.
The US development agency will provide technical assistance to Ethiopia to improve the quality of household-level health services and referral links across health facilities.

Irrigation minister denies reports of deadlock in Ethiopia talks

Returning from one-day trip to Ethiopian capital, Egypt's irrigation minister insists talks will continue to reach a resolution on Ethiopia's proposed Grand Renaissance Dam, set to be the largest hydroelectric dam in Africa
Egypt's irrigation minister has insisted that discussions with Ethiopia over its proposed hydroelectric dam are still in progress, despite recent media reports announcing that the negotiations between Cairo and Addis Ababa had failed.
Al-Ahram's Arabic news website reported on Wednesday that irrigation minister Mohamed Abdel-Motteleb said in a cabinet meeting that efforts are still being spent on reaching an agreement that responds to Egypt's concerns about the dam and that the final status of the negotiations will be announced when they end.

Abdel-Motelleb returned from Addis Ababa on Tuesday after a one-day visit with Ethiopia's water and energy minister Alemayehu Tegenu.

No agenda for South Sudan talks in Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA — Negotiations between the warring factions in the civil conflict in South Sudan are due to resume in Addis Ababa on Monday, but there is still no clear agenda or framework for the talks and the scope of the discussions. Whether to seek a power-sharing agreement or a wider political dialogue, has yet to be determined.

There was also some doubt as to whether the rebel SPLM/A in Opposition would agree to join the talks. The release of all 11 high-ranking political officials, arrested by the state when fighting broke out on December 15 between the forces of President Salva Kiir and former vice-president Riek Machar, has not been secured.

Seven of the captives were delivered into Kenyan custody on January 29, but four — including Pagan Amum, who served as secretary-general of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) party — remain in jail and, along with Dr Machar, have been charged with treason and accused of plotting a coup to overthrow Mr Kiir.
