Teferi Regasa pips Rotich at the post

PUNE: Aesop might have had something to say about Sunday's Pune International Marathon.

Perhaps a fable about how Kenya's Philemon Rotich ran too fast too soon in the men's full marathon - ultimately running out of steam, allowing Ethiopian Teferi Regasa to pip him to the post. And how Rotich's compatriot Pauline Mutwa did just the opposite, waiting patiently for attrition to kick in, then racing away from the leading pack in the final stretch.

Mutwa's less hare-brained strategy proved much the wiser. Not only did she win the women's half marathon title, giving the 21-year-old her maiden marathon victory, but also earned herself the Rs. 1.5 lakh winner's purse.

200m from the finish line, a worn-down Rotich was passed by 24-year-old Ethiopian Regasa , who crossed the line first with a time of 2h:16m:57s.
